GSM Radio Network Planning and Optimization

Duration: 5 days

Due to the fast growing GSM-network systems, the efficient basic planning process continues to have an important role. For existing GSM network systems which are influenced by changing and increasing usage, the continuous optimisation is an additional permanent challenge.

Accordingly, in addition to the introduction to the basics of radio network planning and its system and hardware dependencies, this course offers in a supplementary chapter with detailed possibilities for network optimisation. Subjects such as planning and optimisation of coverage, capacity, allocation of frequencies and network IDS will be explained.

After the course the participants will know about and understand the background of radio network planning. The participant will be able to make sound decisions for the possible usage of software tools. This course teaches knowledge and techniques which are relevant for planning and are independent of particular planning tools.

This course addresses employees in the area of radio-network planning and optimisation who have sound basic knowledge of GSM.

  • Detailed discussion of planning relevant GSM properties
    (frequency bands, measurement quantities, cell shapes and propagation characteristics)
  • Channel configuration and channel function on the air interface

Hardware characteristics

  • Tx/Rx Hardware
    (output power and receiver sensitivity of Ms and BTS and their influence on cell planning)
  • Combiners and filters
    (combining methods, combiner losses and typical values)
  • Feeder and jumper cables
    (differences, transmission properties and typical values)
  • Antenna properties in detail
    (gain, main lobe and side lobes, antenna tilt, half-power beam width)

Basic planning

  • Coverage planning
    (digital maps, important propagation models in detail, diffraction and interference effects, fading, link budget)
  • Capacity planning
    (traffic models, dimensioning)
  • Frequency planning
    (intercell inter ference, cluster calculation, interference matrix)
  • Planning of network identifiers (BCC, NCC, LAC)

Advanced planning and optimization

  • Finding areas with critical demand for optimization
    (performance measurements, drive tests, customer complaints)
  • Optimization of network coverage
    (Cell sectorization, frequency hopping, usage of repeaters, optimization of antenna, optimization of handovers)
  • Optimization of network capacity
    (cell sectorization, halfrate vs. fullrate, cell reselection and optimization of handovers)
  • Optimization of frequency usage
    (spectral efficiency, power control, hierarchical cells, intermodulation)

Case study

  • In addition to numerous exercises in the corresponding chapters an extensive case study helps to deepen and consolidate the acquired knowledge.
