SS7 Introduction

Course description (english, PDF)

Duration: 1 day onsite or 2 mornings online

This course offers a theoretical introduction into the configuration and functionality of the SS7 system. The course focuses on message transfer. In addition, the course provides an overview of the user parts.

The participants will learn about the basic structures of SS7. They will be able to understand and to differentiate between messages which are exchanged within the network.

Target Group / Requirements

This course is addressed to employees of the telecommunication industry who have experience with voice-network systems.

Course Content

Introduction

  • Types of signaling (CAS, CCS; associated, quasi-associated)
  • Signaling network components (signaling points, signaling link set, signaling link, etc.)
  • Signaling network structure (overlay networks, addressing signaling points)

SS7 reference model

  • Introduction into the reference models
  • OSI
  • The SS7 model: the three MTP levels, ISUP, SCCP, application parts

Signaling link level (Level 2)

  • Message formats of the three message types FISU, LSSU and MSU
  • Error correction techniques: basic error correction and preventive cyclic retransmission
  • Messages on level 2
  • States of the signaling link level during initial alignment procedure

Signaling network (Level 3)

  • Level 3 messages: service information octett, (extended) address field
  • Message handling: discrimination, routing, distribution
  • Signaling network management
  • Signaling traffic management (types of changeover and changeback, forced rerouting, MTP restart, flow control)
  • Signaling link management
  • Signaling route management
  • Discussion of typical examples for routing errors

User Parts (Level 4)

  • Overview
  • TUP/TUPP
  • ISUP – user channel related signaling
  • SCCP – signaling without user channel relation
  • ISUP protocol: messages and their formats

Certification

Certificates are given to all participants at the end of the course about the successful completion.
