Context: RAM/LCC (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Life Cycle Costs) are becoming increasingly important in major railway tenders, as they have become one of the decisive factors in awarding contracts. Failure to meet the agreed RAM/LCC targets is often subject to significant contractual penalties. System manufacturers have long engaged top-tier experts for this subject. However, small and medium-sized enterprises are now also recognizing the need to develop these competencies.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of RAM and LCC in a condensed format, enabling them to establish their own RAM/LCC processes, prepare RAM/LCC data for bids, and conduct their own RAM/LCC data analyses, if necessary, with guidance. They will become familiar with various terms and methods related to RAM/LCC requirements as outlined in IEC 62278 (EN 50126). This includes model criteria and conditions, failure categories, failure scenarios for both RAM and LCC considerations, RAM/LCC data collection, and the periodic data analysis required for validation.

Dozent: Andreas Krönert
We share our best first-hand knowledge with you! Following the credo of the IRIS Academy, The Best for the Best in the Railway Industry, Andreas Krönert from Siemens AG will lead this seminar. He has been working as a Senior Specialist Engineer in RAM/LCC for the railway business for 20 years. During this time, he has been involved in numerous Siemens and Alstom rail vehicle projects throughout the entire lifecycle, from bid preparation, development, design, testing, and commissioning, to the final trial and commissioning phases. Among other achievements, he has also contributed to the development of maintenance-related standards and RAM/LCC regulations in national and international committees.

Objectives: The goal of the course is to provide sufficient inspiration for improving your RAM/LCC business in light of the upcoming requirements in the railway sector and to familiarize you with all relevant RAM/LCC topics. In particular, ISO 22163 (IRIS standard) requires RAM/LCC knowledge with a special focus on the FRACAS process. After the course, you should have enough best practices and solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into your daily operations.

Target Audience: Managers and engineers from the fields of marketing/sales, engineering, project management, testing, commissioning, maintenance, quality management, and internal auditing.

Content: The following topics will be covered in detail:

  • Introduction to RAM,
  • Normative requirements, IRIS requirements, EN 50126, and the application guideline CLC/TR 50126-3,
  • RAM/LCC processes and procedures, organization for RAM/LCC, tools, prior bids, and project tracking, certification cycles, bid phase, and design/demonstration phases, reviews, and predictions,
  • RAM/LCC project planning,
  • Reliability: failures and disruptions, failure modes, fault categories, relevance, system architecture, and identification of Line Replaceable Units (LRU), failure rates (unit, calculation), mission profile, reliability KPIs,
  • Availability: uptime and downtime states, maintenance times for RAM/LCC considerations,
  • Risk management: FMEA, FMECA, background, theory, application, and supplier FMECA review,
  • Field data collection, data cleaning and analysis, insights & lessons learned, introduction to FRACAS, root cause analysis, and reliability growth,
  • Maintainability: maintenance (corrective, preventive, predictive),
  • RAM/LCC calculations using the UNILIFE tool,
  • RAM/LCC tools, internet links, and resources for RAM/LCC applications, commercial tools,
  • Numerous practical exercises and case studies from real-life scenarios,
  • Workshops for exchanging and discussing best practices in the railway industry.

The course provides essential RAM/LCC fundamentals and deepens understanding through numerous practical examples and exercises. Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of Excel applications.
