The Czech-Bavarian Supercomputing Summer School '25 welcomes you to learn about basics and highlights of modern supercomputing, including AI and quantum-computing aspects. 

We will have the following programme (pending minor modifications):

Day 1: Basics of Modern Supercomputing

  • Introduction to High-Performance Computing
  • Getting to Know a First HPC System - Hands-On Exercise: Submitting a Computing Job
  • HPC System Concepts at IT4I, LRZ and Elsewhere
  • Hands-On Exercise: Running a Complex HPC Application

Day 2: Data-Driven Workflows across Heterogeneous Systems

  • Introduction to Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems
  • Hands-on Exercise: Using Cloud Computing and the LEXIS Distributed Computing Platform
  • Supercomputing with Optimum Data Backends - EXA4MIND
  • Hands-On Exercise: Automating Data-Heavy Workflows

Day 3: AI and Quantum Computing

  • Basics of Artificial Intelligence - Training and Inference
  • Hands-on Exercise: An AI Model
  • Quantum Computing
  • Outing / Free Evening

Day 4: Data Management and Supercomputing Applications in Real Life

  • EUDAT - European Collaborative Data Infrastructure
  • FAIR Research Data Management in Supercomputing
  • Hands-on Exercise: A Supercomputing Workflow with Research Data Management
  • Summary, Announcements and Farewell

The Summer School is co-organised by the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ), Germany and the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center (IT4I), Czechia.

Prerequisites

  • What do you really need? - An interest in supercomputing and good basic Linux skills. Please briefly outline your motivation for joining the Summer School and summarise your Linux/HPC knowledge in the registration form (max. 200 characters each).
  • The school is for students and young scientists (up to first-postdoc level).
  • Participants please have to bring a laptop and pay the school fee (400 EUR including lodging, food, drinks and programme).

Planned Hands-on exercises extend on the following topics:

  • Running a complex HPC application
  • Using Cloud Computing
  • Using LEXIS and automating data-heavy workflows

  • A supercomputing workflow with Research Data Management

Location

The school will take place in the lovely hotel Panství Dlouhá Lhota, about 50km from Prague.

The site is reachable from Prague via Buses 393 or 395 from Praha Smichov station to Drásov, Skalka.

Arrival is recommended on the evening of 8 September (or 9 September before start – about 9:30).

Prices and Eligibility

The Summer School is open for (young) academic participants from EU and Associated Countries to the Horizon Europe programme.

The participation fee (including lodging, food and programme) is 400 EUR.

The following categories can be selected during registration:

  • [Invited Speakers and Organisers] Invited speakers and organisers: 0 EUR

Registration

Please register with your official e-mail address to prove your affiliation. Following your successful registration, you will receive an invoice in July. After paying the invoice, you will not receive a receipt. If you require proof of payment (e.g., for reimbursement) please use a copy of the invoice together with your bank statement indicating the payment.

Withdrawal Policy

Due to hotel/venue booking requirements, please understand the following special policy for the Summer School:

You can declare your withdrawal after registration by e-mail to [email protected]. The day of withdrawal is the day of receipt of the withdrawal notice at LRZ. We cannot accept cancellations by phone.

If you withdraw from the Summer School we will charge you as follows:

  • Up to 10 July 2025: free of charge,
  • 11 July - 10 August 2025: 50% of the participants fee,
  • from 11 August 2025 on: 100% of the participants fee.

Registrants for an event may designate a substitute participant at any time and free of charge. The substitute will bear any fees for participation.

Please understand that we must reserve the right to cancel an event due to low registration, the absence of a lecturer, force majeure, or similar causes. If cancellations or necessary changes of the program occur, we will make every effort to inform you as early as possible. If we have to cancel an event, we will refund your participant fees immediately. Additional claims against LRZ are not permitted, except for cases of willful intent or gross negligence.

The agreement shall be governed by German Law. Place of jurisdiction is Munich.
