The Shetlands, which are part of Scotland, lie to the north-east of the Orkneys and are home to just 23,000 inhabitants. Here we start our cruise from Lerwick, the small but beautiful capital of the archipelago. Depending on the prevailing weather conditions, we will either set a direct course for the Faroe Islands or make another stop on the Shetlands. Whether we call at a harbour or spend the night at anchor is up to us. After around 200 nautical miles, we reach the Faroe Islands, another fascinating archipelago. Steep coasts and rugged landscapes characterise the appearance here. Incidentally, more sheep live here than people, which does not detract from the beauty of the islands. After resting in Thorshavn and stocking up on supplies, we set sail again. This time we head south, another 200 miles to Stornoway to be precise. Expected course of the trip:

We sail westwards with the POLARIS from Lerwick. During stopovers in the midst of historic landscapes, you will experience the Nordic nature and way of life at first hand. You will also gain experience on the longer legs, including night sailing. Highlights of the journey will include the Shetland Islands, the Faroe Islands and the Hebrides. With Stornoway, we finally reach another centre of the north. From here, you will travel by flight to Glasgow or Edinburgh, from where you can take the final flight home in comfort. Depending on the weather and the timetable, it may be necessary to cover longer sections of the journey by plane. Total distance: approx. 400 nautical miles.

Services included:

• Stay and accommodation on an ultra-modern and exclusively equipped expedition yacht from GARCIA. A ship in a class of its own, which you will not find anywhere else in the world for bookable sailing holidays.

• Provision of a high-quality and regularly maintained automatic lifejacket with integrated AIS transponder.

• Provision of all prescribed and standard safety and rescue equipment. Naturally as good as new and regularly serviced.

• Professional ship management and supervision by two experienced professional skippers. All crew members receive a comprehensive on-board and safety briefing.

• Use of all on-board facilities of our expedition yacht POLARIS, e.g. central heating, bathrooms, WI-FI, satellite telephone (only for offshore trips), water maker, generator, 220 V on-board power, area guide, nautical charts, etc.

• Not included are Costs for travelling to and from the destination, costs for provisions, drinks, diesel, demurrage, fees incurred and other undertakings. With the exception of travel costs, these expenses are allocated to the on-board fund, to which all guests contribute equally. The main skipper is also catered for from the on-board fund. The catering costs for the co-skipper are covered by HS-Segelreisen GmbH.

Information on arrival and departure:

When planning your journey, please note the different departure and destination ports (Lerwick -> Stornoway). To travel to Lerwick, use local flights from Glasgow or Edinburgh. The transfer from the two major Scottish cities is completely hassle-free. Your return journey from Stornoway is then also by regional flight to Edinburgh or Glasgow. From here, flights to Frankfurt, Amsterdam or London Heathrow are available. In this respect, we recommend the relevant booking portals Swoodoo and Opodo for your research. Sometimes it also makes sense to search for flights directly on the websites of the relevant airlines to obtain additional allotments or a cheaper price.
