The program was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Numerous scientific studies showing the benefits of MBSR make this program the most recognized and established mindfulness course.
The MBSR 8-week program is for people who
- feel stressed by their jobs or private situation or who feel burned out
- are living with an acute or chronic disease
- are suffering from chronic pain
- have psychosomatic symptoms (problems with sleep, digestion...)
- experience feelings of anxiety or depression
and who
- want to learn how to work with this situation
- want to foster their sense of health and wellbeing
- are seeking a complementary treatment to medical or psychotherapeutic treatment
- want to live with more mindful awareness
- want to learn ways of self-exploration and self-care
In 2.5 hour classes once a week plus a full day mindfulness practices are introduced and discussed in class and practiced at home between sessions. The practices include various forms of meditation and mindful movements and can be practiced irrespective of age or physical limitation.
Participants receive course materials and audio files for their individual practice at home. The daily practice takes between 40 and 60 minutes and is an essential part of the program.
A personal interview with the teacher before and after the program is part of this offering.
