Treatment of attachment trauma with EMDR in adults
Trauma inflicted by caregivers during childhood or adolescence usually has profound consequences for those affected. Adults who suffered emotional abuse from caregivers at an early age have developed strong defense mechanisms and are the clients for whom therapy has the least chance of success. Their survival instincts in relationships prevent others from getting close to them and perpetuate a cycle of mistrust toward those who dare to love or help them.
Without secure relationships, affected adults have no buffer against depression and anxiety disorders and fewer opportunities to process traumatic events emotionally. In addition to unstable relationships, adults suffering from attachment trauma often lack self-awareness and are unable to recognize and tolerate emotions properly. They also frequently resort to harmful ways of coping with this deficiency.
Parents transfer their attachment style to their children in about 80 percent of cases, thus perpetuating the negative cycle between generations.
Workshop participants will learn strategies to help adults overcome treatment barriers and cope with issues that arise in countertransference. Participants will learn how to help clients strengthen their competent adult ego and better regulate themselves. They will also learn how to find compassion and healing for the child ego, rewrite early bonding agreements, and negotiate with the “inner family.”
Participants will be able to develop healing stories, focus on and process preverbal trauma, work through appropriate goals with poorly bonded parents, and help clients release blockages during EMDR processes.
