How is Serbia facing the climate crisis? And what role does it play in the global race for “green” projects like lithium mining or hydroelectric energy projects?
This seminar in Belgrade explores how the EU’s climate agenda, Germany’s industry, and China’s growing influence come together in Serbia and the wider Western Balkans. We look at how these forces, often presented as “green solutions,” can displace local communities and harm the environment. At the same time, we learn how people resist and create alternatives.
Our journey includes reflective hikes, site visits, and conversations with activists. We also cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina, where rivers, pollution, and struggles for justice do not stop at borders. We use hiking as a method of embodied reflection: Connecting local sites of contestation to global circuits of capital, extraction, and
political influence under the banner of the green transition.
Please note: This trip is not barrier-free and is best suited for participants with a
good level of fitness who are comfortable walking 10–15 km in the mountains.
